[00:00:10] Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding.
[00:00:17] In all your ways, acknowledge him and he will make straight your paths. It's one of the most beautiful verses in all of the Bible.
[00:00:26] It's one of the most profound invitations in all of history.
[00:00:32] An invitation to trust. What does that mean?
[00:00:36] Well, here's how I would begin the conversation with you.
[00:00:40] I would encourage you to consider this in your moments of intense anger. So I want you to stop and consider for a moment.
[00:00:51] Moments of intense anger.
[00:00:55] In your moments of intense anger, in your moments of crippling worry.
[00:01:02] So moments that you feel so heavy and anxious and worried that it feels crippling and paralyzing, like you can't move forward in anything.
[00:01:15] Some of us are so worried that we struggle to get out of bed in the morning.
[00:01:22] I mean, I got a text last night from a family member who's struggling with suicide ideation.
[00:01:30] So in these moments, I want you to ask yourself this question. What's underneath that, do you think?
[00:01:41] What's underneath the moments of intense rage? Because you know, this, this is what Christianity does that no other religion in the world does or can do or even attempts to do.
[00:01:51] Christianity goes beyond our actions and gets into the issues of our heart.
[00:01:59] Not just what you do, but why you do what you do isn't that profound.
[00:02:07] So what's behind the intense anger? What's behind the crippling worry, the paralyzing fear?
[00:02:15] And this would be a theory? This is just Brad's theory.
[00:02:19] I don't think there's an overly simplistic answer to that question. I think it's multifaceted and nuanced and complex. But I think this is a thing that's behind these moments.
[00:02:32] A lot of fear.
[00:02:33] Number one, that underneath intense anger and rage is fear.
[00:02:43] And a lot of that fear, friends, has to do with, I think, this reality you and I desperately want control.
[00:02:56] That underneath the anger and the worry is fear.
[00:03:01] And underneath the fear is a belief that you and I are alone in the universe and it is our job to take control of things.
[00:03:14] I think that's what we're getting at.
[00:03:16] And so what's the antidote to that problem?
[00:03:22] That's what we're going to talk about through Proverbs. Three moments of regret, fear, control.
[00:03:34] What's the antidote to that? Well, the Bible helps us in these ways. So last week we defined wisdom like this. We said that wisdom is not just knowledge.
[00:03:49] Wisdom goes beyond knowledge. It's deeper than knowledge.
[00:03:54] If knowledge is intellect, knowing things about God and the world and what it means to put your faith in Jesus and what Jesus did. And all of that knowledge is necessary. But knowledge in and of itself is insufficient for wisdom.
[00:04:11] If knowledge is intellect, then wisdom is the skill. Can you guys say, kids included? The skill.
[00:04:19] The skill.
[00:04:20] Wisdom is the skill by the power of the Spirit, to live a true, good and beautiful life. That's wisdom.
[00:04:30] Knowledge is intellect, knowing things about God. Skill is the ability, empowered by the Spirit, in light of what Christ has done in the Gospel, to live a true, good and beautiful life. And nobody embodied wisdom more than Jesus Christ.
[00:04:46] Jesus Christ is the personification of wisdom. So that we talked about last week. Wisdom isn't just a skill, it's a person.
[00:04:57] In 1 Corinthians, the apostle Paul actually says this. He says that Christ is the wisdom of God.
[00:05:04] The world has its own definition of wisdom, right?
[00:05:08] And God's wisdom flips the world's wisdom upside down. So the world looks at something like the cross of Christ, where God died on the cross and then three days later was resurrected from the grave. But take the reality of God dying on the cross.
[00:05:26] The world looks at that and says, that's utterly foolish. As a matter of fact, church history testifies to this. They used to put images of Jesus on a cross with a donkey's head because it's foolish for a God to die on a cross.
[00:05:39] And the Bible says that the cross is actually the wisdom of God.
[00:05:46] It flips the wisdom of the world. It confounds the wise.
[00:05:52] So wisdom isn't just a skill to live a true, good and beautiful life. Wisdom is Jesus Christ himself.
[00:05:57] He is wisdom. And so there is no growing in wisdom if we don't know Jesus.
[00:06:06] And there is no knowing God without knowing Jesus.
[00:06:10] The fullness of God was pleased to dwell in the person of Jesus Christ. He is the way, the truth, and the life. And no one comes to the Father, but through him, the wisdom of God.
[00:06:23] And so Proverbs 1, what we talked about last week, Solomon, who's said to be the wisest person to ever live, which is really interesting. We don't have time to go into Solomon's life, but I would encourage you to study it sometime.
[00:06:35] Read Ecclesiastes. Read Second King, first and Second Kings. Read Song of Solomon. Read the Proverbs, like, get to know Solomon, because Solomon was a very paradoxical man, wasn't he?
[00:06:46] He married all sorts of wives. Many of them weren't followers of Yahweh.
[00:06:51] He made a lot of foolish decisions. Yet the Bible tells us that he is the wisest man to ever live. But someone greater than Solomon is here, which is the person of Jesus. Right?
[00:07:00] Nonetheless, Solomon prays for wisdom. God gives Solomon wisdom, and so he writes the Proverbs. And in Proverbs 1, he says this is kind of like the theme for the Book of Proverbs. He says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom or the beginning of knowledge.
[00:07:15] So if the fear of the Lord, which again, for Christians, the fear of the Lord is not a fear of dread.
[00:07:23] It's not a fear motivated by the dread of punishment. Because our punishment, friends, has been taken away.
[00:07:29] The punishment we deserve was put on Christ over 2000 years ago. Praise God. That's amazing. That's why we gather, that's why we celebrate. Okay, so if the fear of God for the Christian is not dread, then that means it's delightful.
[00:07:43] It's being so awed by something bigger than yourself that you're left speechless. But that speechlessness is accompanied with otherworldly delight.
[00:07:57] It's observing the storm under the shelter, like we talked about, you're safe. You're safe from the storm. So you can observe all of the majesty of the storm and be reminded of the source of it.
[00:08:11] If the thunder is loud, then the God who is the source of the thunder is louder.
[00:08:16] But that God who is the source of the storm is not merely your judge. If you're a Christian, he's your Father.
[00:08:24] And so the Father of the storm is your Father. And you're safe in Christ. Your soul is eternally safe in Christ, so you can observe the bigness of God and be filled with delight. Solomon says that's the beginning of wisdom, is the fear of the Lord. So if the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, what then is the path of wisdom?
[00:08:47] Trust.
[00:08:48] That's what we're talking about today.
[00:08:50] The fear of the Lord is the door. We walk through the door. Jesus, by the way, according to John, chapter 10, is the door.
[00:08:58] So he says, come through me and experience life abundant. So we walk through Jesus by faith. We trust in what he's done on our behalf through his life, death and resurrection.
[00:09:10] And if you haven't done that, that's your first step. That's how you enter into a relationship with God. That's how you are forgiven of your sins. That's how you can know that heaven is your future is by putting your trust in Jesus.
[00:09:23] We enter in through Jesus and we enter into the green pastures. That is communion with God.
[00:09:29] This is Christianity.
[00:09:31] And the pathway Then to live this skilled, beautiful, true and good life is the path of trust. Does this make sense so far? All right, so here's what we want to do this morning. We want to define trust. What does that mean? What does that word mean? We're going to define trust.
[00:09:49] I want to talk to you for a few moments about why trusting God is hard.
[00:09:54] Because it is.
[00:09:56] And we can again, safe place. You can. We can admit this together.
[00:10:00] What is trust?
[00:10:01] Why is trusting God hard? And then I want to leave you with a promise that the passage leaves us with.
[00:10:08] So let's look at the verse together. Verse 5, verse 5, Proverbs 3 says, Trust in the Lord with all your heart. All right.
[00:10:21] Now, the heart is the control center of your life and of mine. It's not just the organ that beats.
[00:10:30] When the Bible talks about the heart, it's talking about the primary motive, center of everything that you believe and do.
[00:10:40] So we're to trust in the Lord with all of our being, our mind, our will, our emotions, and our actions.
[00:10:52] Everything that we are is to trust in the Lord. So what is trust? Well, here's a definition for you.
[00:11:04] Trust is childlike confidence that God has our best interest at heart.
[00:11:13] I'll say that again.
[00:11:15] Trust is childlike confidence.
[00:11:21] So picture a child running into the arms of his or her parent.
[00:11:27] Trust is childlike confidence that God has our best interest at heart.
[00:11:36] And trust, like faith, ought not be the object of our focus as followers of Jesus.
[00:11:46] The point is not the trust, but the object of our trust.
[00:11:51] So if trust is childlike faith that God has our best interest and heart, if we want to grow in trust of God, then we must not focus on our trust, but on God.
[00:12:06] Does that make sense so far when we focus on the object of our trust, that is God? Again, in a similar way that a child does with their mommy and daddy when they run into their arms, why do they do that?
[00:12:21] You don't have to educate a child to do that.
[00:12:24] You don't have to ask them to do that. You do when they grow up a little bit. And that's sad, right?
[00:12:32] But you don't have to educate a child to run into the arms of mommy and Daddy. And that's because what is built within them is an intrinsic trust for you.
[00:12:48] They won't do that with everybody.
[00:12:50] Why?
[00:12:52] Because they don't trust them.
[00:12:54] But they trust you.
[00:12:57] And if you're not a parent, it was the same for you as a child. If, by the grace of God, you're fortunate enough to have mom and dad around.
[00:13:08] Kids instinctively trust their mom and dad. And what's beautiful about all of that is that is put within the heart of a child by a God who is himself father.
[00:13:22] You know, To childlike trust that God has your best interest and heart. The word, the Hebrew word, has this idea of leaning, leaning the entirety of your weight onto something that, again, instinctively, you don't have to question whether or not that thing is going to hold you up. We give this illustration all the time, but think about you sitting in the chair that you're sitting in now. You Would you have sat in the chair that you're sitting in now if you thought it might break?
[00:13:56] You absolutely would not have. You didn't have to be told to sit down. You did. Tyvere told you to sit down.
[00:14:01] But Tyvre didn't have to stand on the stage and convince you that it was safe to sit down.
[00:14:07] You did it because you trust that the structure beneath your bottom is holding you up right now.
[00:14:14] That's what trust is.
[00:14:16] It's leaning the entirety of your weight onto something trustworthy. And so Solomon says, trust in the Lord.
[00:14:30] In the Lord. The object of your trust, lean the entirety of your being, your mind, your soul, your heart, your circumstances, your family, your kids, your marital status, your work, your job.
[00:14:46] Lean the entirety of it on the Lord.
[00:14:53] 2nd Samuel 1, 6 says of Saul before his death that he was leaning on his sword.
[00:15:01] This is the picture is leaning the entirety of his weight on his sword.
[00:15:07] Judges 16:26 says, Samson was leaning on the pillars.
[00:15:15] Job 8:15 says, A man leans against his house because he trusts that the structure of the house is going to stabilize him.
[00:15:26] This is the idea of what it means to trust. And so my question to you before we move on to why it's difficult for us to trust in the Lord, is what or who, friends, are you leaning on today?
[00:15:40] What or who are you leaning on?
[00:15:43] And so, again, it's just a thought exercise.
[00:15:46] What has you worried today?
[00:15:51] Like what in your life today, when you think about that thing, kind of puts that pit in your stomach.
[00:15:58] You just don't know how it's going to work out.
[00:16:01] As a matter of fact, not only do you not know how it's going to work out, but you think toward the negative.
[00:16:06] What if this happens? What if that happens? What if this person does this or says this? What if I lose this?
[00:16:12] What if I get the call?
[00:16:14] What if I get the diagnosis?
[00:16:19] What is that thing? And in that moment, what do you lean on?
[00:16:26] Do you lean on?
[00:16:28] I don't know.
[00:16:30] Wikipedia.
[00:16:32] Do you lean on doom scrolling the Internet to try to figure out how to fix the thing that you think is going on in your life?
[00:16:43] Do you lean on your spouse to give you what only Jesus can give you?
[00:16:49] Assurance, full acceptance, untainted love?
[00:16:58] What or who are you leaning on? Because the answer to that question, friends, is what or whom you are trusting in.
[00:17:07] So if the call then is to trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding, we have to ask the question of what is it that makes trusting difficult? And the answer is actually in the text.
[00:17:25] What makes it difficult for us to trust God, friends, is our understanding.
[00:17:31] So what Solomon's saying, he's saying, lean on the Lord, do not lead on your own understanding.
[00:17:43] And this applies to a lot of different areas of life that we lean on our own understanding. And so we can acknowledge again, it's no surprise to any of us in the room that our understanding of things, of the world, of our circumstances, of ourselves, of God, is what makes it difficult for us to trust God when things don't make sense to us and our understanding.
[00:18:08] So we all acknowledge this. And one of the reasons, by the way, that we read the Psalms every week in church is because the Psalms give us human language for human situations unlike any other book of the Bible does.
[00:18:21] So David says in Psalm 56:3, in a moment of just faith and courage, he says, when I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
[00:18:31] Okay, so when I am afraid, I put my trust in you. But that is not all he says in the psalms in Psalm 22, verse 1 and 2, he says this. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
[00:18:42] Why are you so far from saving me from the words of my groaning, oh, my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer. And by night, but I find no rest.
[00:18:51] So when I received that text last night from my family member saying, I'm struggling, I kind of want to end my life, when I received that text, then I felt an immediate dark night of the soul where I'm questioning, like God, where are you in that?
[00:19:13] And we all feel that way from time to time.
[00:19:17] We can relate to David in his high moments, we can relate to David in his low moments. So what is it that makes trusting God difficult? Well, there are again all sorts of things. But the thing I want to focus on for just a few minutes is I think what makes it difficult for us to trust God in dark moments is that we often rely on our own understanding of God, our own understanding of who God is.
[00:19:43] And there are two kind of primary ways I want us to think about that. I think we often live with a misunderstanding of who God is. Okay, number one is this, that we think about God's imminence and we forget his transcendence.
[00:20:00] Let me define those words.
[00:20:02] Imminence is the nearness of God.
[00:20:06] Okay? It's the.
[00:20:09] The state of dwelling within and not extending beyond a given domain. So it's the reality that God is a friend, that he loves you, that he cares for you, that he's near you. And when we only think about God that way, we're taking a truth about God and we're forgetting the reality of his transcendence. Meaning this, that God is the creator of the cosmos. So if God is only near, but he isn't strong, then. Then he can't help you and he can't help me. You don't run into the arms of a person that you know only cares for you and will listen to you, but can't do anything to help your circumstances.
[00:20:49] Children, to use the illustration again, run into the arms of parents that they know care for them but will also protect them from danger.
[00:20:58] And so when we only think about God as being caring, loving and kind, and we forget the transcendence of God.
[00:21:06] Okay, 40 billion. Pastor Matt can. He's not in the room, so he can't correct me if I'm off on my astronomy. Yeah, he is. Okay.
[00:21:14] 40 billion stars in our galaxy, or 400 billion. Something like that. 440 billion galaxies in the known universe like. And then universes and galaxies beyond that.
[00:21:25] God's the Creator of all of them.
[00:21:30] One author says we can no more catch a hurricane in a shrimp net or Niagara Falls in a coffee cup than we can grasp the infinity of God's reality.
[00:21:41] That's how big he is.
[00:21:43] That's how powerful and majestic and strong he is. He's upholding everything by the word of his power.
[00:21:55] When Christ returns through his strength, he's going to obliterate evil from the face of the cosmos.
[00:22:04] He's stronger than anything or anyone we could ever imagine. We can't wrap our minds around it. I love that image. Try to catch Niagara Falls in your coffee cup. You can't do it. It's too strong.
[00:22:17] That's who God is.
[00:22:21] So that's issue number one, is when we only know God as near, but we don't know him as transcendent, then of course, we fail to trust him.
[00:22:30] Here's issue number two. Some of us only think about him as transcendent. And we know nothing of his immanence.
[00:22:38] He's only big, he's only holy. He's only just. He's only righteous.
[00:22:44] And we forget that. That God, the creator of everyone and everything, the one upholding the universe by the wor of his power over 2000 years ago, became a baby.
[00:22:57] Our youngest is learning to walk. So yesterday she took her first steps with a stroller, right? So not on her own, but she like, pulled herself up with a walker and she just began to walk across the living room floor. And like, we all. We're like kids, come here. So everybody comes in and we're gathered around and we're watching and cheering and celebrating. It's such a. Such a sweet, awesome moment. You never get over those moments as a father. So you're watching this happen. And this thought struck me. Jesus Christ had to learn to walk.
[00:23:32] Doesn't that just blow your mind?
[00:23:35] That the Son of God, the eternal Son of God, had to learn to walk.
[00:23:43] He cried for his mother's milk.
[00:23:47] He experienced the pain of teething and restless nights.
[00:23:54] He had to grow in wisdom and in stature.
[00:23:58] That boggles the mind, as my brother James would say.
[00:24:03] God himself, having given up none of his divinity, by the way, when he takes on human flesh, human that he has to grow in wisdom and in stature. He had to learn things.
[00:24:22] This is the immanence of God.
[00:24:25] Emmanuel God, creator of everyone and everything with us.
[00:24:34] He became like us in every way, but without sin.
[00:24:40] He's been tempted in every way as we are.
[00:24:44] He's felt the pain of the pull, of temptation. Only for Jesus, it was infinitely stronger because he never gave way to it like you and I do.
[00:24:56] He is transcendent God and He his imminent Savior.
[00:25:03] And nothing in all of history displays these two realities together more than his cross.
[00:25:10] That on his cross, the full majesty and power of God comes upon him once for all for sin and at the same time, the love of the Father for sinners.
[00:25:27] And the love of the Savior extends his hands and he stays for you.
[00:25:35] It's the full power of God and the nearness of God in one moment in history. It's the most profound act of wisdom in all of creation.
[00:25:49] And when you and I, friends, begin to remember that God can take care of anything, there's not a single thing that happens in our life outside of his control that he can't change.
[00:26:01] Not a single thing.
[00:26:03] We're so. And I say this lovingly, like, because I do it too. We're so arrogant sometimes, you know, like we ought to start using that word more than even the word pride, because pride's kind of gotten watered down. We're very arrogant in a lot of ways.
[00:26:19] To think that our circumstances are so profoundly big that the God of the universe can't do something about it, that's insane.
[00:26:29] Okay, so he's utterly transcendent. And he is deeply, profoundly otherworldly, intimate.
[00:26:40] This is who God is. And when we remember who God is, the object of our trust, then ironically enough, friends, our trust begins to grow.
[00:26:51] For God, the transcendent God so loved the world that he gave his only Son the most precious object of his affection.
[00:27:04] The Father loves the Son with a love that you and I have never felt or experienced because ours is flawed.
[00:27:14] He loves His Son and He gave that son whom he loves for you and for me.
[00:27:23] He so loved the world that he gave his only son. He is transcendent and he is immanent. The transcendence and the immanence of God meet personally in the person of Jesus Christ.
[00:27:38] And this is why we can trust Him.
[00:27:42] So look at the remainder of the verse as we close.
[00:27:46] So if trust is a childlike confidence in God, that He has good intentions for you, and the reason we oftentimes don't trust is because we have a misconception of God, then what's the promise he gives to us for those of us who choose the path of trust?
[00:28:09] So you're invited to make a decision today, not a one off.
[00:28:13] Not going to make one decision and go off and be just. It's not a silver bullet. It's not going to fix everything. But you and I have a daily invitation from God to trust Him.
[00:28:23] And for those who trust him, what does he promise us? Look at verse six.
[00:28:27] In all your ways, acknowledge him.
[00:28:31] And he will make straight your paths.
[00:28:34] So let's make sure that you're still alive and awake.
[00:28:38] How many ways are we to acknowledge God?
[00:28:43] All of them.
[00:28:46] In all your ways, acknowledge God. What does it mean to acknowledge God?
[00:28:51] It means sometimes I wish this were like we're like in a living room, so we could just have back and forth together. To acknowledge God means that you and I learned to live with a God consciousness, conscientious of the reality of his existence in everything.
[00:29:10] Not just now on Sunday morning when it's easy because we're focused on him, but tomorrow morning, Tuesday, Wednesday. Good times, bad times. In all of your ways, acknowledge Him. And this, by the way, is not just about seeking God's counsel before you make decisions, though it certainly Involves that.
[00:29:31] Do you acknowledge God friends in seemingly minute decisions?
[00:29:36] Or do you only come to him for advice and wisdom when you have to make a big decision, It means that, but it also means that he wants us to be.
[00:29:50] He wants to be the recipient of our cares and concerns.
[00:29:56] In all your ways, decisions and in the concerns of your life and your heart, the worries of your life and your heart, in all of your ways, the big ways and the small ways we are to acknowledge him, to live not as functional atheists, but with a God consciousness.
[00:30:16] I listened to an interview the other day with Elon Musk and I can't remember the guys who do the podcast, but anyways, two young guys. So Elon Musk is talking to two young guys and they're talking about aliens.
[00:30:29] And Musk is quoting Carl Sagan, who said at one point that the universe is either filled with aliens or no aliens at all. And this is what he says. And Sagan was an atheist. He says both realities are equally terrifying.
[00:30:50] And Musk was reinforcing that and the guys on the podcast are reinforcing that. Just like man, the thought of no aliens seems more terrifying than the thought of the universe being filled with aliens. Isn't that interesting?
[00:31:02] Here's again my theory behind what's going on under the hood of these comments.
[00:31:08] As humans, we long to not be alone in the universe.
[00:31:14] We long for it so badly, we want it so badly. We just have no idea on our own where to look for it because our understanding has been darkened by sin that we're like prefer aliens over no aliens. We just don't want to be alone.
[00:31:27] But here's the reality for you and I.
[00:31:30] We know we're not alone. And there's an empty tomb in the Middle east to prove it.
[00:31:35] It's not just that we're not alone and we have to hope in stinking aliens. Are you kidding me?
[00:31:40] Like we know we're not alone because there's an empty tomb in the Middle East. Jesus body isn't there anymore.
[00:31:46] So people can search all the day long looking for the body of Jesus. They're never gonna find him because he's in heaven.
[00:31:54] We're not alone. And so you're invited today to acknowledge him in every single one of your events of life.
[00:32:03] The big moments, the small moments, the embarrassing moments, the things that you don't want to tell anybody else. Tell Jesus he cares about you.
[00:32:15] He alone has the power to do something about things.
[00:32:19] He cares about every single detail of your life. And so friends, trust in the Lord. With all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding in all your ways and acknowledge him. And here's the promise that I leave with you. He will make straight your paths.
[00:32:42] That does not mean.
[00:32:45] Doesn't mean he's going to go before you and iron out your circumstances to perfection.
[00:32:51] It's not what that means.
[00:32:54] It's better than that. If I can convince you to tune me in for five more minutes and to really listen to what I'm saying.
[00:33:01] There is a better promise for you this morning than easy circumstances.
[00:33:08] There's a more profound promise to you, follower of Jesus, than mere comfort. There's a better promise than you not getting cancer. There's a better promise than anything else that we worry about and desire in life that are all normal and good desires to have. There's a better promise, and it's this. He will make straight your paths in the sense of in all ways you're going to get more of him.
[00:33:36] And in everything in life, he's going to make you more like his son.
[00:33:41] That's what that means.
[00:33:45] Acknowledge him in all your ways, and he will make straight your paths. Psalm 23. He leads us in paths of what?
[00:33:55] Righteousness?
[00:33:59] Your growth in holiness and mine is better news than easy circumstances.
[00:34:08] That we would have more of God, our heart's truest desire, and that by his grace we would be made to be like his precious, perfect, beautiful, spotless sun.
[00:34:23] As followers of Christ, I hope that's your great desire in life.
[00:34:28] To be like Jesus.
[00:34:32] To look like him, to talk like him, to treat people the way he treats people.
[00:34:39] To see the world the way he sees the world.
[00:34:43] To love and relate to the Father, the way he loves and relates to the Father.
[00:34:49] Acknowledge him in all your ways.
[00:34:51] He will make straight your paths. Let's pray toward that end.
[00:35:03] Father, help us trust you.
[00:35:07] God, help us. Despite our circumstances, despite what is in front of us today, whatever obstacle, whatever what might appear to be like a mountain in front of us, of problems and struggles and difficulties and God, I pray that especially in moments like that, you would teach our hearts to trust you with all of our heart.
[00:35:28] To trust not in our own understanding and God. We do pray that you would make our path straight.
[00:35:35] I pray for all of us in the room who belong to you, that you would reorient our desires in such a way that our desire would be more of you and more conformity, to be like Jesus, that that would be our heart's desire.
[00:35:53] We wouldn't be people who are bitter.
